I have a beautiful lilac that I have potted in a 16%26quot; container, and it looks great. It%26#039;s outside, and I live in Zone 7-which can have cold temps to 10 degrees. It would be really pretty in a half barrel too.

Yes. I have. When it gets too big though, you need to find a bigger pot or plant it outside. If you plant it outside, in the summer, watch out for bees. It attracts them very much so.
