How do I get my Lilac Crowned Amazon Parrot to stop pulling out his tail feathers?

I%26#039;ve gone through this with both my Senegal and my African Grey.

First take it to the vet and have it tested to make sure there is nothing wrong.

If there is nothing wrong then provide it with LOTS of toys and things to distract it.

That may or may not work. My African Grey doesn%26#039;t pick so much anymore but my Senegal has been pulling his tail feathers out since he was a baby. He is 11 years old now. Pulling out his tail feathers is a habit similar to nail biting and he just won%26#039;t stop...

I tell people that ask, %26quot;Charlie, chooses not to have a tail!%26quot;

You may just have to live with it.

First, you should esplenn to yo mom why you created another account without telling her...then try what the last person suggested, cause it%26#039;s a good idea!
Reply:I just went through this with my %26#039;Teil,suspect the Diet first of all,if all seed that is your problem,go directly to the Vet!!Once I rounded out my %26#039;Teils diet,and discluded meat,he was fine.You need to do something quick before it becomes behavioral,when they pick it sends endorphins to the brain which creates a no-pain response,so they do it more and more,like a drug addict.Get him help now.
Reply:First you need to figure out what%26#039;s bothering him so bad, and make sure he%26#039;s just not molting. But you can have a vet make an E-Collar out of some old X-Ray film. This helps several birds they wear it for about 8 wks, then it%26#039;s trail and eare, take if off and it%26#039;s it starts again put back on for a wk you may have to due this for about 6 weeks but in about 70 % of cases it has worked. (it%26#039;s not 100%) Make sure the bird doens%26#039;t have mites or anything else going on medical.

Best of luck, also try when you leave to put on some quite soft music, and cover the cage 3/4 up.
