Lilacs flower on buds found on the tips of the branches. Pruning now, especially tip pruning will eliminate the flowers this spring. However, it is easier to see the mess inside the lilac now. You can prune at the base only by removing the oldest stems at the ground level (the wood is very hard, your pruning equipment better be sharp) and pull it out. Also you can remove a fair amount of the suckers that have been coming up these last few years. Above all, NO CUTTING on the tips of the remaining branches. This will save flowers for this spring. After the plant blooms, you have about 90-100 days before new buds are formed on the tips with the flowing year%26#039;s flowers. So it%26#039;s OK to tip prune right AFTER flowering up until July 4th or so.
I want to trim my lilac bush. What is the best time of year and conditions (leaves or no leaves)?
Late fall when leaves have fallen. You probably won%26#039;t have as many flowers in the spring though.
Reply:trim it when it is dormant, basically late fall or early spring.
Reply:No leaves. When Spring comes back around the leaves and new stems with fill in the empty areas.
Reply:Hello,
Right after they flower is best.
We took quite a few babies and planted them in the fall, well Mr. did I kind of watched lol! .
Mr is the lilac person here, and we have huge ones! We seam to give away babies every year in the fall.
He would not touch them right now he is saying we have very cold temps here. Depends what zone you are in etc.
